Going Local for Rooting For Health!

Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador in partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture, Agriculture in the Classroom Program, the School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Egg Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador is holding its 6th Annual Rooting for Health in five schools throughout our province tomorrow!  The purpose of this initiative is to help school aged children recognize the relationship between farming, food and health.  Farmers will provide details on their local trade.  Breakfast will be prepared by a chef using local ingredients including eggs, milk and berries.

Check out this delicious and nutritious recipe with local berries:

Step #1: Pick your base

  • Flavoured low fat yogurt (vanilla, strawberry, blueberry)
  • Greek yogurt
  • Plain low fat yogurt

Step #2: Choose your local fruit and berries

  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Bake apples
  • Black currents

Step #3: Add a topping

  • Dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, prunes, dates, apricots)
  • Granola
  • Dried cereal
  • Oats
  • Chia, flax or sesame seeds
  • Unsweetened coconut
  • Bran buds
  • Nuts (pecans, almonds)
