Kids Eat Smart Clubs are quality nutrition programs that support the physical, academic, and social well-being of school-aged children. Kids Eat Smart Clubs exist because children learn better when they are well-nourished. Problems associated with inadequate or poor nourishment show up in the classroom through a child’s inability to concentrate, behavioural issues and increased absenteeism due to frequency of illness. Research also shows that children who eat breakfast have improved memory, problem-solving skills, verbal fluency and creative abilities. Kids Eat Smart Clubs are run at schools and community centres throughout the province, and are supported by Kids Eat Smart Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador and the local community.Community involvement is essential:community groups, service clubs, church groups, businesses and others offer financial support, and volunteers can be parents, grandparents, teachers, members of community service clubs, church groups, students, friends, and others who care! Kids Eat Smart Clubs have a Best Practices policy that works to ensure that programs serve foods that meet the nutritional needs of growing school children, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. These foods include milk, fruit, yogurt, healthy cereals, whole grain breads, milk products and other nutritious choices. Best Practices also offers support in organizational structure, safe food handling practices, and standards and guidelines essential for running a quality nutrition program. Most Kids Eat Smart Clubs serve breakfast, but some serve snacks or lunch. |
